Honeymoon Mistakes To Avoid:

Not realizing that most tours & cruises depart on Saturdays
At least the 7-day cruises that is, and with Saturday being the most popular day to marry… hmmm…..you can see the conflict, can’t you? Most of the 3-day sailings depart on Fridays, most 4-day sailings depart on Mondays, and there are even 10- and 11-day sailings and longer! So if you’ve always dreamed of taking a cruise honeymoon, be sure to book your cruise first, and take the departure date into account when choosing the wedding date and location. And unless you live within driving distance of the port of departure, you’ll have a flight too (normally booked at the time you book your cruise), so keep in mind that you’ll need extra time to get to the port city (maybe the night before?) to allow for a leisurely (and stress-free) embarkation.

Travel Tips:

Make Flying with kids easier on everyone

It's not easy on kids to sit still for a long flight, but for first-timers, these tips should help keep the kids happier and make the time pass more quickly for all of you:

  • Avoid sugary snacks & drinks - it will make them antsy and irritable. Instead try single-serve cups of fruit, pre-cut carrot sticks, or even some chicken fingers and something to dip them in;
  • If they're old enough, chewing gum helps them adjust to the changing pressure on take-off and landing (try the sugar-free varieties);
  • Age-appropriate puzzle books are a great way to keep them occupied as well as learning new words and skills;
  • Bring a set of head-phones for each of them - almost all airlines broadcast music and on longer flights there is a movie - no need to "rent" the airlines headphones as standard ones (the type you use with a CD player) will work;
  • Having their favorite pillow, blankie, or stuffed animal along will help them feel more comfortable, maybe even enough to take a nap!
  • Lastly, while it's not wise to have their names emblazoned on their clothing, be sure each child has Identifcation in case they get separated from you.

    Ask Honey   Honeymoon Advice
    Dear Honey,
    My fiance and I are thinking of bringing our kids on our honeymoon (we each have two, all under 13), but don't want to spend our time babysitting. Are there any really good options for us?
    - Saundra, Norfolk, VA

    Dear Saundra,
    Yes - there certainly is! In fact "Familymoons" have become so popular that many destinations now cater to your unique situation! One of our personal favorites, Beaches Family Resorts, has numerous age-appropriate programs for kids of all ages and offers evening babysitting as well, so that you can have a couple of romantic dinners alone - this lets you spend as much time alone as you wish and still have plenty of opportunities to spend time having fun as a family too. In addition, Disney Cruises does an awesome job with similar programs, and Carnival has recently geared up their "familymoon" programs as well - I could go on with more, but I hope this opens your eyes to the possibilities - you no longer have to choose between leaving them at home (and feeling left out) or bringing them and feeling like you missed out on some quiet, intimate time with your new spouse - you can have it all!

    Best regards,
    Honey
