"The good news for travelers: The economy is improving. The bad news: A healthier airline industry may spark higher fares.
Already in the fourth quarter of 2003, starting prices on bargain fares rose by about $10.
Fortunately for those who live near cities served by a host of new and expanding low-cost airlines, competition is bound to keep prices down. Expect lower fares on routes served by Denver-based Ted, United's new low-fare startup, which takes off in February.
Reasonably priced airfares from Boston and New York to various florida locales such as Fort Lauderdale can be had even in winter high season, thanks to the presence of low-cost carriers Spirit Airlines, Song, and Jet Blue in those markets. And Philadelphia residents bound for six cities including Chicago, Las Vegas, and Orlando can expect to get there for less starting May 9, when low-fare pioneer Southwest Airlines sets up shop at the Philadelphia airport, touching off what is certain to be aggressive competition from US Airways.
Americans increasingly will turn to the internet to book travel, with a new interest in customizing packages that bundle hotel, airfare and car rental into one deal. A study last fall by online travel consulting firm PhoCusWright and web-services company Vividence indicates that while only 28% of respondents had actually booked an online travel package, 68% expressed an interest in doing so. With the online marketplace heating up, major booking sites and individual corporate sites will work harder to capture customer loyalty. Resist the urge to be loyal - getting the best deals on the internet still requires some shopping around."
